Looking out of my kitchen window I took this photo of a Little Owl on Wednesday, 13/01/2010 at 11.45am. This little fella was perched in the tree whilst snow was falling around it. Needless to say it was bitterly cold out there and so was the owl.
I was born in Durban, South Africa and grew up in the suburb of Hillary. Been living in the Uk since June 2003, thanks to my Irish heritage. Hillary was a middleclass suburb and still had plenty of naturalness around. Mango and litchi trees, bush and rivers surrounded the family home. This meant that the best part of my youth was spent in a near feral state in the bush, down by the rivers fishing and air rifle hunting, during the holidays me and my pals would be out all day till about 5 when we came back for our dinner, then straight back out into the darkness to carry on what ever mischief we were up to. Most of our time was spent building camps, climbing trees, making fires and indulging in numerous dangerous and challenging past times, no one ever got hurt, well not too seriously and we are all still alive today. The thing is, I never really grew up. So here I am today, in the UK, still building camps, making fires, climbing trees, foraging for wild food and air rifle shooting and of course fishing. The only difference now, is that I have more kit to do it properly and have great pleasure doing it. I am also a husband to Susan and a father to Damian and Kelly.
